How To: Get Creative With Pots & Planters

Gardening is a truly rewarding hobby which can be enjoyed by anyone, regardless of how much space you have available to you. Whether you have a large garden or a small balcony, there are ways to create a beautiful and thriving garden using pots, planters, and even a few household objects! In this article, we’ll explore some creative ways you can utilise pots and planters in your garden space.

How To: Get Creative With Pots & Planters

Mix and Match your Containers & Plants

One of the easiest ways to spruce up your garden is to mix and match different types, styles and sizes of containers. You can create wonderful displays by using containers with different colours and textures too. For example, you can utilise small pots for herbs and succulents, medium-sized pots for flowers, and larger containers for shrubs or small trees.

As well as mixing up the containers you use, you can use a mixture of plants as well. Don’t be afraid to put multiple plants in the same container such as tall spiky grasses at the back of a planter, with shorter plants such as petunias or pansies in the front. You can even do this with hanging baskets, where you have an upright plant in the centre, with trailing plants around the edges

Create a Vertical Garden

If you are short on space, creating a vertical garden is a great way to make the most of your area. Using hanging pots, wall planters or even repurposing an old ladder or shelf can help you create a beautiful space. Make use of trailing plants such as ivy and petunias to make the most of limited space.

Recycle Unusual Containers

If you’re looking to add some uniqueness to your garden, try adding some household containers as pots and planters. You can use just about anything as long as it has a drainage hole at the bottom or you can create one. Some great examples of recycled containers include old watering cans, wheelbarrows, and even old wellies! You can even use old teapots, mugs and cups to plant small herbs and succulents. You could use small and unusual containers as part of a fairy garden or rockery. Using unusual containers as planters will not only add a touch of whimsy to your garden but also help you repurpose items that might have otherwise ended up in the landfill.

Create Seasonal Displays

Another creative way to use pots and planters in your garden is to make seasonal displays. For example, you can change the plants in your pots to match the upcoming season. Bulbs can be planted in the autumn or winter for a flourishing display come spring. Planters can also be utilised for Christmas or Halloween decorations by choosing colour-themed pots and adding decorative elements such as lights and ornaments. Creating seasonal displays will add visual interest to your garden and help keep it fresh.

Adding a variety of containers to your garden is an easy way to add creativity and style to your outdoor space. Whether you’re making use of unusual containers, creating a vertical garden or mixing and matching your pots and plants there are an infinite number of ways to decorate your garden to suit your needs.
